521 rooms, pool, 2 spas, 2 lighted tennis courts, fitness room, room service, valet parking, 2 restaurants, lounge, empty fridge, 6 shops, 8 conference rooms, business center, Wi-Fi throughout resort, coin-op laundry room, coffee makers in room with free coffee daily, free room safes, Nintendo, chapel, children's program, health spa, lu'au. This resort was closed for 3 years before $80 million worth of renovations ushered in the new Sheraton in 2005. It's best described as sophisticated, understated, islandy, and it embraces their oceanside location. (No sand beach, and they could use more plants in the interior areas, however.) Their mantra (and marketing direction) is family, fitness and fun, and it's reflected in their multi-level water feature with 200-foot waterslide, waterfall and pool that meanders into the lobby atrium. The fitness room (for those who can't bear to be on vacation without working out) is state of the art with a killer view of the ocean. The keiki center might just be the best we’ve seen in the state, complete with foosball, PlayStation, basketball, ping pong, wide-screen movie theater, craft room and more. (It's $60 for a full day, which includes lunch.) While we're talking about keiki, they even offer scuba in their pool to kids as young as 5. For older kids, they have a gaming area with pool tables, ping pong and foosball. They have a good wedding infrastructure, including a chapel and wedding planner.

Self-parking is $8, valet parking is $14, Internet is $11 and local calls are $1.50. There is a free trolley that will run guests all the way into Kona Town and to some shopping and beach stops along the way. Overall, a modern, comfortable, family-friendly getaway. Hence, the gem. Rooms (450 sq. ft.) are $325-$425, suites (925-3,000 sq. ft.) are $850-$3,000. Their partial ocean view category is worth the upgrade over the mountain view rooms.
