The best selling guide to the Big Island... Hawaii "My husband and I have just returned from a trip to the Big Island and also to Maui....we used your 'Revealed' books in both locations, and found them to be incredible, well written, and quite funny as well...thanks so much!" |
Volcano House (808) 967-7321 Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park ![]() ![]() 42 units. This hotel/lodge is located on the rim of Kilauea Caldera inside Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. They are a protected park concessionaire and our expectations were low, but we're pleased to say that this hotel, like the park itself, is surprisingly well run. The rooms are small and worn, but clean for their age. They have phones, but no tvs or radios. At night most people either head down to the lava flows (Pele permitting), relax at the bar or just curl up by the fire in the lobby fireplace, said to have been burning continuously since 1874 (though they "move" the fire when they need to clean the fireplace). Some of the rooms (especially 31-33) have excellent crater views. No minimum stay. The lobby gets unbelievably busy at lunch but quiets down at night. The cheapest rooms are in the 'Ohi'a building (avoid the downstairs rooms if possible--they're below ground level and they may get a little buggy and musty-smelling). The 'Ohi'a wing has a little lobby with its own fireplace (you may have to light that one--don't be shy about asking for more wood). The more desirable main building rooms (200 sq. ft.) are $170-$225, 'Ohi'a rooms (120 sq. ft.) are $95-$125. They also operate 10 cabins for $50 at Namakani Paio. |
