Updates To 4th Edition It happens every time. The day after we send the disks off to the printers for our brand new edition, somebody changes something that directly affects what we write in the book. Several times we've e-mailed these changes to the printers (it's our only chance to yell that classic publisher line, "Stop the presses!") but after the presses roll we're left shaking our heads, saying, "Yeah, we know that changed. We'll correct that in our next printing." The internet is the next best thing to yanking back all the books in print and scribbling in the changes that always occur. The updates below are for the 4th edition of Maui Revealed. There are no longer any updates to the 3rd edition available on this site. Did you know? At Wizard Publications we continually strive to bring you the most up-to-date and accurate information on the islands. We are the only publisher who updates our books every time we reprint them. So if you see the updates below already listed in the book you just bought, you may have a recent printing. • • • • • In a dramatic move with far-reaching consequences, the state has closed public access to most of the 'Ahihi-Kina'u Reserve on August 1, 2008. This means the La Perouse Bay Snorkel/Hike on page 233, the Hike to the Heart of an Eruption on page 239 and the excellent snorkeling at Fishbowl on page 167 will not be available for at least two years (probably forever). Road Past Hana: You can drive past the park until 1/2 mile past the 40 mile marker. The road is closed between here and Kaupo because of the danger of rock slides. The county is still assessing this danger and making plans to strengthen the walls and cliffs above the road in this area. No time frame set for opening. So if doing the Road to Hana, you still can't go all the way around. This isn't really an update. People keep sending us e-mail asking us why the time-saving road linking Wailea with Kula upcountry isn't on our maps (though it is on other maps). At the risk of sounding self-serving, the other maps are wrong. As mentioned on page 136, that road is private, gated and not accessible. Most of Polipoli State Park has been reopened. However, Mamane Trail (on page 238) and Lower Waiohuli Trail and Upper Waiakoa Trail are still closed. No date set for reopening them has been set. Aloha Airlines (page 22) is out of business. Check their website for more information: www.alohaairlines.com. Romantic Maui Wedding's (page 25) local phone number should be 808-249-8484. The phone number for the Current Weather Forecast (pages 26 & 76) has been changed to 1-866-944-5025. If you were planning on taking the kids to Kalama Park (page 35) vandals destroyed half of the park in a fire in late January 2008. Hopefully the community can pull together and get it fixed up again for the kids. Maui Go Carts (page 35) is pau (closed). Internet access on island (page 42) has changed. In South Maui try, Blue Moon (formerly Ashley's South Shore Cafe) at 808-874-8600, they have free Wi-Fi if you order food. In Pa'ia, Livewire Cafe is closed, Morning Glories at 808-579-3336, opened in its place and has access. The Sugar Museum (page 69/70) admission is now $7. Maui Ocean Center (page 128) admission is now $24 for adults and $17 for kids. The trail to Lower Puohokamoa Falls (page 81) is now closed to the public. Henry Clay's mentioned on page 142 is closed and Lana'i City Grille opened in its place--good food. All commercial guided bike tours have been banned by the National Park Service from Haleakala National Park. The bike tours we describe under "From The Summit of Haleakala" on page 173 in the BIKING section, have all been impacted. The best part of the ride, the highest 3500 feet of elevation, is no longer part of the experience. This was a third of the elevation change, and the most impressive part of the downhill experience. Please contact the companies directly for details. Aloha Bicycle Tours (page 175) no longer offers their winery tour. The phone number for Trilogy (page 208 & 213) has changed to 808-874-5649. The phone number for Hawaiian Sailing Canoe Adventures (page 208 & 216) has changed to 808-281-9301. Seaside Spa at the Sheraton Maui (page 227) is closed. Ultra Dive (page 244) has relocated to the Fairmont Kea Lani in Wailea and is now part of Prodiver Maui call them at a new number 808-875-4004 to make reservations. Dish (page 250) meal delivery service changed its name to "Delicious" and then went out of business. Also in the Island Dining Chapter, Ashley's South Shore Cafe changed its name to Blue Moon Cafe. The staff and menu and phone number remain the same. The following restaurants from the Island Dining chapter have closed: Beach 'n Bagelz, Hirohachi and Yorman's by the Sea. In South Maui Nightlife (from our Island Dining Chapter), Bada Bing is no longer open as a nightclub in the evenings. The lu'au (from our Island Dining Chapter) called, Pali Kai Lu'au at the Maui Beach Hotel is not operating anymore. And speaking of lu'aus, you may find your price to attend one has risen and will cost you $2 to $5 more than it used to. Tableside Chefs (page 287) is out of business. Try dinner on a beach arranged through a resort. |
