Updates To 4th Edition It happens every time. The day after we send the disks off to the printers for our brand new edition, somebody changes something that directly affects what we write in the book. Several times we've e-mailed these changes to the printers (it's our only chance to yell that classic publisher line, "Stop the presses!") but after the presses roll we're left shaking our heads, saying, "Yeah, we know that changed. We'll correct that in our next edition." The internet is the next best thing to yanking back all the books in print and scribbling in the changes that always occur. The updates below are for the 4th edition of Maui Revealed. If you wish to view updates to the current 5th edition, click the "UPDATES" link above. There are no longer any updates to the 3rd edition available on this site. Did you know? At Wizard Publications we continually strive to bring you the most up-to-date and accurate information on the islands. We are the only publisher who updates our books every time we reprint them. So if you see the updates below already listed in the book you just bought, you may have a recent printing. • • • • • In a dramatic move with far-reaching consequences, the state has closed public access to most of the 'Ahihi-Kina'u Reserve on August 1, 2008. This means the La Perouse Bay Snorkel/Hike on page 233, the Hike to the Heart of an Eruption on page 239 and the excellent snorkeling at Fishbowl on page 167 will not be available for at least two years (probably forever). Nahiku Road: (page 88) the Hana police department informed us that a bridge near the bottom of the road is open again. This isn't really an update. People keep sending us e-mail asking us why the time-saving road linking Wailea with Kula upcountry isn't on our maps (though it is on other maps). At the risk of sounding self-serving, the other maps are wrong. As mentioned on page 136, that road is private, gated and not accessible. Aloha Airlines (page 22) is out of business. Wai'anapanapa State Park (page 90 & 92) is now again accepting reservations for camping and cabins again. However, due to cutbacks, they no longer provide linens (sheets, blankets, towels, dish cloths, etc), so you have to bring your own. Maui Ocean Center (page 128) admission is now $25 for adults and $18 for kids. Kitada's (page 117) is closed. Kula Botanical Garden (page 118) is now a $10 entrance fee. Sunrise Market and Protea Farm (page 118) phone number is 808-269-4080. Henry Clay's mentioned on page 142 is closed and Lana'i City Grille opened in its place--good food. All commercial guided bike tours have been banned by the National Park Service from Haleakala National Park. The bike tours we describe under "From The Summit of Haleakala" on page 173 in the BIKING section, have all been impacted. The best part of the ride, the highest 3500 feet of elevation, is no longer part of the experience. This was a third of the elevation change, and the most impressive part of the downhill experience. Please contact the companies directly for details. Haleakala ATV Tours (page 172) is no longer doing ATV tours. Aloha Bicycle Tours (page 175) no longer offers their winery tour. Dish (page 250) meal delivery service changed its name to "Delicious" and then went out of business. Also in the Island Dining Chapter, Ashley's South Shore Cafe changed its name to Blue Moon Cafe. The staff and menu and phone number remain the same. The following restaurants from the Island Dining chapter have closed: Aloha Island Shave Ice, Bada Bing, Beach 'n Bagelz, Compadres, Enrique’s Cocina Mexicana, Hirohachi, Hecock's on the Ocean, Kahuna Kabobs, Manana Garage, Prince Court, Sweet Spot, and Yorman's by the Sea. The lu'au (from our Island Dining Chapter) called, Pali Kai Lu'au at the Maui Beach Hotel is not operating anymore. And speaking of lu'aus, you may find your price to attend one has risen and will cost you $2 to $5 more than it used to. Tableside Chefs (page 287) was closed but is back in business with a new owner, Shannon McDonald, but we have not had a chance to re-review them yet.
